Anime (アニメ) is the Japanese word for "cartoon." The Japanese borrowed the English word "animation" and shortened it to "anime." In Japan, the word "anime" refers to all animated series or features (cartoons) world-wide. To the Japanese, Bugs Bunny or Tom and Jerry are anime titles as well as something like Dragon Ball.

Outside of Japan, foreign fans of Japanese animation borrowed the word "anime" and defined it to mean a Japanese-produced animation title to segregate it from normal cartoons.
