Gon Freaks, a young boy, is living alone with his mother on a little island. His father, a well-known hunter, disappeared years ago. After hearing his father is still alive, he decides to leave his mother and attempt the hunter exam to find him.

Hunter X Hunter is divided in 3 parts :
- the main part, 62 episodes, mainly about the hunter exam
- OVA 1, about the genei ryodan
- OVA 2 and OVA 3, called greed island and greed island final (GI final)
The three OVA are direct continuation of the serie, so it's better to watch the serie in proper order
