Kurozuka (黒塚) is a violent horror anime TV series whose story is based on a Noh play of the same name^[1] about a demon woman who drinks people's blood. It starts out in the form of an historical 12th century samurai-type drama but then moves to the present day (leaving the Noh play behind), with the main character Kurou having been made immortal by the demon woman Kuromitsu.

The anime series is an adapted from the manga drawn by Takashi Noguchi, which itself was an adaptation of a supernatural romance novel by Baku Yumemakura about Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Kurō), brother of the first shogun of Japan, who falls in love with an immortal woman.^[2]

The original Noh play Kurozuka is also known as Adachi ga hara (安達原): "the Fields of Adachi",^[3] and is a well-known story concerning some monks who stay with a woman who tells them not to look in her room (which is full of dead bodies), and who turns out to be the demoness of Adachi (or Kurozuka). It was also the basis for one of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura stories, where Ataru and his friends seek shelter with an old woman in an isolated cottage during a snow storm.^[4]

Kuromitsu : Main Character A young looking female who is told to have lived over a 300 years. Trying to stay out of the hands of ruling clans that seek the answer of eternal life she hides in the mountain forest where she has a hidden house with a backroom which is not to be entered by any visitors under any circumstances. Untill one night two men appear seeking refuges from pursuers.

Kuro : The Main Character of the story line. A young warrior/monk (?) from the 12th century of Japan, running from pursuers of all kind that'd like to see him dead (his brother for one), he fled into the mountain forest with his companion. seeking refuge at the seemingly abandoned house of Kuromitsu, he has no clue what awaits him/them.

Benkei : Kuro's companion. Kuro gets betrayed by Benkei in the third episode. Cuts the head of Kuro with his katana.
