[edit] Synopsis
NieA_7 (pronounced NieA Under 7) is a 13 episode series by Yoshitoshi ABe which was made in the year 2000. It is a poignant comedy about an empoverished half-starved student, Mayuko, who has an uninvited layabout alien girl living in her room. The series explores issues of poverty and prejudice via a story set in a 21st century Japan where shipwrecked aliens are trying to integrate themselves into human society.

Mayuko Chigasaki, an empoverished student who can barely afford to eat. She survives by holding down two or three part time jobs in between attending cram school during a preparatory year before starting university. Voiced by Ayako Kawasumi.
NieA, an Underclass 7 alien with no antenna. (Most of the aliens have antennae, like stereotypical old-fashioned cartoon aliens. The alien caste system runs from Plus 5 to Under 7, making NieA the lowest of the low.)
Chiaki, a UFO-obsessed student & blogger who befriends Mayuko and NieA.
Genzo, a childhood friend of Mayuko. An imposing-looking but gentle teenager, he looks up to her as a big sister figure from when he was a little boy, but she seems to barely remember their times together.
