Ai Haibara was born Shiho Miyano, second daughter to a couple already in The Black Organisation. When Shiho was very young her parents (Atsuhi & Elena Miyano) died in some kind of accident. The Black Organization arranged for her to be schooled in America. Then later brought her back, give her the Codename "Sherry", and had he developing poisons for the Organisation. Her older sister, Akemi tried to make a deal with Black Organization to get Shiho out, but was kill by "Gin". During this time Shiho continued her parents work and developed an untraceable poison called APTX-4869, though angered at the death of her sister, and not told why she was killed she rushed the poison into human trials, and hid the fact in rare cases it caused the subject's cells to revert to a previous age. She was also responsible for changing Shin'ichi Kudou's death status from unconfirmed to confirmed when she guessed what happened to him. Depressed over her sister's death and realizing the Organization was going to kill her anyway, she took some APTX-4869 herself trying to commit suicide. Only to be turn back into a child herself. She then escaped though a ventilation duct in her now child sized body and sought out the one person that would understand what's going on, and could possible help her, Shin'ichi Kudou. She was found collapsed outside of Shin'ichi home, by his neighbor Dr Agasa.
She has taken on the identity of Ai Haibara, and is in Conan's class, as well as becoming the 5th member of the Shounen Tantei Dan. Gin and Vodka are hunting Sherry as a Traitor to the Organization, but do not know she has rejuved and is now living as Ai.

Her distinctive appearance is the result of her mother being American.
